My approach to Life Coaching is based in the theory and research of Positive Psychology. Scientific studies show that we perform best when we are rewarded and acknowledged for our efforts. Individuals are more likely to feel happier when they are achieving their goals. Coaching helps you achieve your goals by identifying your strengths and using them to bring about change in your life.

Ava Barron-Shasho, MSW is a Life Coach who specializes in working with deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals.  What is life coaching you may ask?  If you have ever felt unmotivated, frustrated or disorganized, life coaching sessions are a time to focus on you. Ava has her Masters in Social Work and a Bachelor's in Psychology and brings 20 years of counseling experience to her Life Coaching practice.  She works with individuals in the Baltimore area and across the country. Her philosophy of life is that change is ALWAYS possible!

The ABC’s of Meniere’s Disease

Forty thousand new cases of Meniere's Disease occur annually. Most often the disease affects patients 40 - 60 years old.  The four major symptoms include vertigo, hearing loss, tinnitus and aural fullness.  Symptoms vary greatly from patient to patient.  Please join us on April 25th, 2013 when Brian Kaplan, MD, F.A.C.S explains the symptoms, diagnosis and treatment of Meniere's Disease. 

Dr. Kaplan was born and raised in Boston, Massachusetts, attending Cornell University for his undergraduate education. He attended the University of Virginia School of Medicine, remaining at UVA to complete his residency in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. He served as Chief Resident before joining Ear, Nose & Throat Associates. Dr. Kaplan's past research interests have included hearing loss, chronic sinusitis, and facial reconstruction. He currently practices the full scope of ENT, with particular interest in pediatrics, otology, and sinus disease. Dr. Kaplan is Board Certified in Otolaryngology, a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and has been recognized as a "Top Doc" by Baltimore Magazine.

Guest Speaker: Lise Hamlin 

We are very happy to welcome Lise Hamlin from the National Office of HLAA.  Lise will speak about the many things theHearing Loss Association has been working on as your advocate in the nation’s Capitol. Learn what’s new and what the future holds for HLAA’s advocacy initiatives and how they impact you.  She will discuss efforts on affordable hearing health care as well as HLAA work with the FCC on issues ranging from HAC mobile phones, captioned telephones, captions over the Internet and television and emergency alerting.

Lise joined the Hearing Loss Association of America’s (HLAA) national staff as director of public policy and state development in April 2008. She represents HLAA on the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Advocacy Network, the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Alliance, the Hearing Aid Tax Credit Coalition and the Friends of the Congressional Hearing Health Caucus. In addition, Ms. Hamlin has made numerous presentations and workshops on issues related to access for people with hearing loss. She has authored several articles for HLAA and TDI on both emergency preparedness and on access issues for people with hearing loss.

Guest Speaker: Tracie D. Reaver

The Greater Baltimore Chapter of the Hearing Loss Association is happy to have Tracie D. Reaver as our November speaker.  Tracie is the Maryland Relay Outreach Coordinator.  She has spoken to our group before and provides current and very helpful information about special telephone services for the hard of hearing.

Maryland Relay is a free public service that provides Captioned Telephone Services (CTS) to enable individuals with hearing or speech loss to stay independent on the telephone.

CTS (Captioned Telephone Services) are for people who are hard of hearing or deaf and have understandable speech.  This service enables them to communicate on a special amplified phone with the support of captions.

Maryland Accessible Telecommunications distributes free amplified and captioned phones, ring signalers, TTYs and the other assistive devices to qualified applicants who have difficulty using a standard telephone.

Dr. John K. Niparko is the George T. Nager Professor of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery and directs the Division of Otology, Neurotology & Skull Base Surgery at Johns Hopkins. He is the director of The Listening Center at Johns Hopkins, a multidisciplinary program of deafness rehabilitation.

Dr. Niparko has been the Principal Investigator in many important studies including one involved with Evidence Development of cochlear implants in seniors sponsored by the center for Medicare and Medicaid Services commencing in 2012

Dr.Niparko received the Goldstein Public Service Award from the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery in 2000 in recognition of international outreach in training providers of hearing care, the Pride in the Profession Award from the American Medical Association in 2001, and the Deafness Research Foundation’s Hearing Science Award for 2002. He has been named to the Collegium Oto-Rhino-Laryngolicum Amictiae Sacrum Honorary Society and was awarded the Professor’s Award for both Basic Science and Clinical Teaching at The Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in 2007. He currently serves as the Editor in ChiefOtology & Neurotology.

Dr. Niparko was a Board Member of HLAA and has spoken at many of the HLAA National conferences. Most importantly Dr. Niparko has advocated for the people that are hard of hearing his entire career and has been instrumental in making all of our lives better in some way.

We are so happy to have him again this year as a monthly speaker in our local chapter.

Julie Anne Schafer, Esq. Deputy Director
 

Julie Anne Schafer has over a decade of education and experience related to
communication access for deaf, hard of hearing, and deaf blind individuals.
She has been the Deputy Director of the
Governor’s Office of the Deaf and
Hard of Hearing (ODHH) since May 2009.
Prior to that, she served at the Office’s Communications
and Special Projects
Coordinator and the Senior Staff Assistant.
Ms. Schafer coordinates all of the Office’s legislative efforts
and serves as the agencies expert on laws and policies
related to individuals with hearing loss.

A University of Baltimore Law School Alumnus,
she dedicated her clinic work
to representing clients at the National Association of the Deaf.
She is a Member of the American Bar Association
and the Maryland State Bar.
